The problem with what goes for realism these days is that it dehumanizes people and cares little for their suffering. Indeed, when realists act on the humanitarian frontو they do so only in the hope of silencing their critics, for that’s their main, and perhaps, only concern. This is why their efforts in this regard represent no more than a drop in the ocean. Knowing that, some realists become even more “realist” and advocate a do-nothing policy even on this front. But what difference is there between these realists who still claim to believe in democracy, and autocrats, who obviously don’t, if both types show little concern for human suffering? Cynical amoral realism does not make the world a better or safer place, even if it sounded rational.
